Old Lyme's Side Door Jazz Club specializes in bringing the finest musicians from the New York/Boston circuit. Each Friday and Saturday at the Door typically features different world-class artists coming through for a one-night stand.

On occasion, if the act happens to have a second available date, the Side Door will double up, which makes for pretty special listening opportunities.

Take this weekend, for example. On Friday AND Saturday, esteemed composer/drummer Ralph Peterson brings his latest band, Aggregate Prime, to the Side Door. Peterson is an in-demand veteran who's worked as a sideman with the top names in jazz. As a leader, Peterson is inundated with talented youngsters wanting gigs with the master.

Aggregate Prime is proof of the latter. Including bassist Kenny Davis, guitarist Mark Whitfield, pianist Vijay Iyer and tenor saxophonist Gary Thomas, the band will take Side Door fans on a whirling, time signature-fracturing bullet train ride of exuberant, Dolphy/Monk-style post-bop.
