'Happy Together' package tour brings stars to the Garde Friday

As a fellow who grew up in real time with The Turtles and Three Dog Night, I'm a little disconcerted by the set lists I've seen of the "Happy Together" package tour coming Friday to the Garde Arts Center.

Yes, the Turtles are topping the bill in one of those co-headlining situations — where someone has to go on last — with Chuck Negron, the signature voice of Three Dog Night. But while, by design, these events feature short, hit-clustered performances by the acts — with other '60s familiars Gary Puckett, the Buckinghams, the Classics IV and the Cowsills also showing up — I'm seeing some glaring omissions (at least as my record player and I remember it).

The Turtles, for example, aren't doing "She's My Girl" or "You Know What I Mean." And Negron — who will admittedly break out biggies with "One," "Joy to the World," "Celebrate" and "Eli's Coming" — will deprive old, deeper-cut fans (like me) of tunes like "Old-Fashioned Love Song," "Easy to Be Hard" and "Pieces of April."

But this is quibbling. If this is your generation of music, these American acts stuffed the charts with hits.

"Happy Together Tour," 8 p.m. Friday, Garde Arts Center, 325 State St., New London; $49-$69; (860) 444-7373, gardearts.org.
