Rising country star Luke Combs plays Sun Arena Friday

With age and experience, it's possible to perhaps ascribe a degree of authenticity to the creative efforts of younger folks.

For example, consider 29-year-old country music star Luke Combs, who headlines the Mohegan Sun Arena Friday. On Wednesday, Combs won the Male Vocalist of the Year and Song of the Year trophies at the CMA Awards, has hit the top after only two albums, the just-out "What You See is What You Get" and 2017's "This One's for You." His first six singles — "Hurricane," "When It Rains It Pours," "One Number Away," "She Got the Best of Me," "Beautiful, Crazy" (the 2019 Song of the Year winner) and "Beer Never Broke My Heart" — all went to #1. Wow!

The problem? Combs, for all his retro-tonk style and an equally compelling persona that makes it look like he got cut as an offensive lineman from Ole Miss and turned to country music, rings very hollow on that "Beer Never Broke My Heart" tune.

See, Luke, if beer never broke your heart, then you didn't drink enough to run OUT of beer after the liquor stores closed. Any serious drinker knows that feeling — and it is truly heartbreaking.

Well, Luke is young yet. Plus, he's already so successful he'll presumably never run out of beer again.

Luke Combs, 8 p.m. Friday, Mohegan Sun Arena; Appearing in support will be Morgan Wallen and Jameson Rodgers; $25-$99; 1-800-745-3000.
