Musical Masterworks continues 29th season Saturday and Sunday in Old Saybrook

    Adam Neiman (Lisa-Marie Mazzucco)

Superb classical musicians interpreting proven commodoties from "the repertoire" can pretty much turn in memorable concerts in the most unlikely situations.

Part of the genius of Edward Arron, the virtuoso cellist who also serves as artistic director of Old Lyme's Musical Masterworks chamber music series, is his ability to maximize those components by applying subtle textures. Consider the Masterworks program Saturday and Sunday, when Arron utilizes the "home field advantage" of the First Congregational Church — with its to-die-for acoustics and performer sight-lines, the gorgeous ambient lighting of late fall, and the buoyant hopefulness awash between Thanksgiving and Christmas.

To these elements he's enticed pianist Adam Neiman and flutist Tara Helen O'Connor to join him onstage for a program that features two Debussy works — L'isle joyeuse for solo piano and the Trio in G minor — along with Villa-Lobos's Assobio a Játo (The Jet Whistle) for Flute and Cello; Kevin Puts's Air for Cello and Piano; and Farrenc's Trio in e minor, Opus 45.

Not to be missed: Arron will deliver a special pre-show talk on the program and musicians an hour before the performances.

    Musical Masterworks, 5 p.m. Saturday and 3 p.m. Sunday, pre-concert talks at 4 p.m. Saturday and 2 p.m. Sunday, First Congregational Church, 2 Ferry Road, Old Lyme;  $40 for adults, $5 for students; (860) 434-2252, www.musicalmasterworks.org.
