Jazz pianist Larry Fuller hits Side Door Saturday behind "Overjoyed"

According to the latest polls, there are only 37 optimists left in this mournful and frankly scary world. Fortunately, one of them is jazz pianist Larry Fuller, who last spring released the affirming, seductive and swinging "Overjoyed" album.

Comprising a dozen tunes — superb originals as well as inspired arrangements of work from the likes of Ray Brown, Wes Montgomery, Stevie Wonder and more — "Overjoyed" is a clever concept album of sorts exploring the many ways to express happiness. The New York Times described Fuller's efforts by saying, "He sprinkles stardust on whatever song he plays; you hold your breath in wonder."

"Overjoyed" is indeed the stuff of heady sorcery, and Fuller's tribute to his wife, "Jane's Theme," is a wonderful piece that more than indicates the evocative artist is as fine a writer as he is a player. See the Larry Fuller Trio Saturday in Old Lyme at the Side Door Jazz Club — he'll be accompanied by bassist Vincent Dupont and drummer Jason Tiemann — and feel better about things.

Larry Fuller Trio, 8:30 p.m. Saturday, Side Door Jazz Club, 85 Lyme St., Old Lyme; $35; (860) 434-0886.
