Neil Simon's 'Rose and Walsh' staged at McCook Point Bandshell

The first local theater group to get up and running last summer after COVID hit Connecticut was Theater Under the Shell, led by Joyce Beauvais.

Starting on Saturday, they are back again performing at the McCook Point Park Bandshell in Niantic, this time doing a Neil Simon play.

“Rose and Walsh” focuses on the love story between two great writers. Rose is esteemed for her work but is destitute. Walsh has fared much better financially.

The story is set in 1984 at Rose’s beach house on Long Island. And it is said to have been inspired by the relationship between Lillian Hellman and Dashiell Hammett.

Beauvais directs the cast, which features Sheila Tennyson as Rose and Richard Springman as Walsh, along with Hilary Weissberg, Leonard Salter and Ginny Katz.

This is the group’s fifth season under the shell.

“Rose and Walsh,” 6 p.m. July 31-Aug. 5 and Aug. 7-8, McCook Point Park Bandshell, Atlantic Street, Niantic; $20 suggested donation; bring blankets or chairs.
