Jazz pianist Ted Rosenthal brings his trio Saturday to Side Door

If we believe that, in any particular musical genre, a huge percentage of that style's best artists are virtually unknown, then it's time to introduce you to Ted Rosenthal.

    Who?

    See what I mean?

Rosenthal, a jazz pianist, has performed across the globe in a solo guise, with his trio and as a sidemen to luminaries such as Gerry Mulligan, Art Farmer, Phil Woods, James Moody, Bob Brookmeyer and the Vanguard Jazz Orchestra. Rosenthal won the the 1988 Thelonious Monk International Jazz Piano Competition, has released 15 CDs as a leader including the chart-topping "Rhapsody in Gershwin," and is the winner of three — count 'em, three! — three NEA grants. Rosenthal also composes orchestral works and ballet scores, including some for dance wizard Alvin Ailey.

On Saturday, Rosenthal brings his trio, with drummer Tim Horner and bassist Noriko Ueda, to the Side Door Jazz Club in Old Lyme. Methinks you'll remember him.

Ted Rosenthal Trio, 8:30 p.m., Side Door Jazz Club, 85 Lyme St., Old Lyme; $24-$45; www.sidedoorjazz.com.
