The play’s the thing this summer in Westerly, where a wide array of stage productions are going up both inside and outside.

Granite Theatre has a new artistic director, Erin Sousa-Stanley, and she’s bringing fresh energy, not to mention her own long and lauded history in area theater, to the venue in downtown Westerly.

The Granite at 1 Granite St. has a family-friendly show in July: “Shrek The Musical,” running July 7-24. August features Neil Simon’s comedy “California Suite,” from Aug. 12-27. More shows follow in the fall.

Westerly's Wilcox Park, meanwhile, is hosting a number of theater performances. Stage Door Theater Company presents “Lois Has Something to Tell Albert,” a comedy written and directed by Eugene J. Celico, July 7-10. And then comes The Colonial Theatre’s production of Beckett’s “Waiting for Godot,” scheduled for July 22 to Aug. 14.
