Norwich - The City Council's Public Safety Committee on Wednesday will begin review of recommended sites for a proposed new police station with presentations from the study committee that reviewed nearly three dozen sites and from developers of two prospective sites.

The Public Safety Committee has moved its 7 p.m. meeting to the Council Chambers at City Hall to allow the meeting to be broadcast on the Comcast government channel and on the city website.

The Police Station Committee submitted its final report to the council March 27 recommending the former William A. Buckingham School property on Washington and Cedar streets as the top site. The council asked its Public Safety Committee last week to review the findings and submit its report and recommendations by early October.

Two properties

The Public Safety Committee will start with a presentation from the study committee Wednesday on its findings. Local construction contractor Gary Schnip will discuss a proposal to build a new police station on property at 28 N. Thames St., owned by Thayer's Marine & RV. Then local real estate broker Steve Becker will describe a proposal on a second property he declined to identify until Wednesday's presentation.

Becker said the proposal involves a public-private partnership plan and the property is one that the study committee considered.

Safety Committee Chairman William Nash said he has given each group 15 minutes to make presentations. The committee then will study the report and could request more information for a future meeting - such as financial details - from the two developers on their proposals.

Voters in November 2012 soundly rejected a $33 million plan to convert the former Sears building and several surrounding downtown properties into a new police station and parking garage. The study committee dropped the parking garage concept and estimated construction of a new building at $19.2 million, not including land costs.

"I'm looking forward to hearing the presentations," Nash said.
