Cianci comeback effort in Providence falls short

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) _ The mayor-elect of Providence says his victory shows voters want a new direction in the city.

Democrat Jorge Elorza comfortably beat six-time ex-mayor and two-time felon Buddy Cianci in Tuesday's election.

Elorza said Wednesday he wants to bring in new faces to city government. He says he believes that at a fundamental level, the city's residents all want the same things and he is going to focus on what they can do together.

He says jobs and fiscal responsibility are among the areas he hopes to focus on.

Elorza says he will announce his plans for a transition team next week. In the next two months, he says he plans to meet with every department head so he can hit the ground running.
