Comeau two-hitter for NFA stifles Fitch in 6-0 softball victory

Groton — Last time she pitched, Norwich Free Academy's Bailey Comeau got hit in the bicep of her pitching arm so hard with a comebacker to the mound, that the ball ricocheted all the way into the outfield for a base hit.

"I would have been broken for a week," NFA coach Bryan Burdick said of Comeau, a junior. "She pitched a complete-game shutout."

Comeau followed that game, Monday against Mercy, with another gem Wednesday afternoon against Eastern Connecticut Conference Division I rival Fitch. She pitched a two-hitter with seven strikeouts and five walks as the Wildcats defeated Fitch 6-0 to remain the only unbeaten team in the division.

NFA (9-3, 4-0) scored three runs in the top of the first inning, striking for five hits right away. Sara Cote had an RBI triple to right and Alex Burdick scored Cote with a double down the left field line. Comeau beat out an infield single and Brooke Gottshall laced a double up the middle to score Burdick with the third run.

The Wildcats added three more unearned runs in the fourth, getting an RBI double to the left-center field gap off the sweet spot of Cote's bat and a two-run single by Burdick. Burdick and leadoff hitter Hailee Schrader each had three of NFA's 12 hits.

Comeau, meanwhile, allowed a two-out triple by Karly Morales in the first inning and not another hit until Meagan Giwoyna doubled in the sixth.

Comeau was caught for a good part of the game Wednesday by her sister Brenna, a freshman, with senior captain and regular catcher Shea Gendron calling pitches from the bench. Gendron singled as a pinch hitter in the fourth and stayed on to finish behind the plate. Bryan Burdick said he was just giving Gendron some rest and Brenna Comeau some experience.

"I got hit in the bicep the last game, so I was a little stiff, but I think I did OK," said Bailey Comeau, who played first base for NFA through last season, sharing pitching duties this year with Sophia DiCocco following the graduation of Wildcats ace Beth Fleming.

"The (warm) weather helps a lot. I feel confident. It's a big transition from last year. I think we're doing well."

Burdick called Comeau (7-2) "more on than off" this season.

"She misses bats," Burdick said. "And when they do hit it, it's not clean. They don't square up well. Everything she throws keeps hitters a little off-balance."

Burdick also said the positive results couldn't be achieved by a more down-to-earth person.

"I'm absolutely thrilled she's having the success she's having," Burdick said.

The Wildcats have South Windsor and all-state pitcher Maria Hanchuk on the schedule Friday and Southington, ranked second in the state, on Sunday. In the ECC Division I standings, NFA has a one-game lead over East Lyme, with the teams' final meeting of the season on May 14 in East Lyme.

    Fitch is 5-7, 2-3.

"Before Cheshire (a 12-3 loss Monday), we were on a great hitting streak," Fitch coach Kyle Baron said. "We got down on ourselves after Cheshire. When we're hitting the ball, everyone's hitting the ball. When one person's not hitting the ball, no one's hitting the ball.

"We took live at-bats (Tuesday) and we were hitting the ball really well at practice. We had an off day today."
