‘Bigger’ than ever: Sugarland comes to Mohegan Sun

    They’re back!

Sugarland — the country-music duo of Jennifer Nettles and Kristian Bush — had been on a bit of a hiatus. After Sugarland’s 2010 album, “The Incredible Machine,” both Nettles and Bush pursued solo projects. And Nettles had a baby.

But you can’t keep a good group down, and Sugarland reemerged with a new release earlier this year. “Bigger” made it to #2 on the Billboard Top Country chart and #11 on the Billboard 200.

It’s a dynamic work, recapturing the patented Sugarland sound and spirit. At the same time, it doesn’t shy away from some tough issues; the ballad “Tuesday’s Broken” touches on school shootings.

But there’s also more traditional subject matter, as in the break-up song “Babe.” That tune was written by Taylor Swift and Patrick Monahan of Train for Swift’s “Red” album, but it didn’t make it onto the final CD. Swift provides guest vocals for Sugarland’s version.

Sugarland is back on the road in support of “Bigger,” and they are bringing their tour to Mohegan Sun Arena tonight. Hearing Nettles sing live, with her powerful and extraordinarily versatile voice, is worth the price of admission.

    Sugarland, 7 p.m. Thursday, Mohegan Sun Arena; $50.50-$90.50; 1-800-745-3000.
