Local roundup: ECC to crown five tournament champs on Thursday

It's "Championship Thursday" in the Eastern Connecticut Conference, with five tournament titles being decided in three sports: field hockey, boys' soccer and girls' soccer.

The first two postseason titles were determined on Wednesday when Woodstock Academy and Lyman Memorial successfully defended their Division and Division II volleyball championships, respectively, at Norwich Free Academy.

On Thursday, the venues change to East Lyme, Montville and Stonington.

At East Lyme's Dick North Field, the Division I boys' and girls' soccer titles will be played with second-seeded East Lyme playing No. 4 Woodstock in the boys' final at 4:30 p.m., followed by the girls' game between No. 1 Plainfield and No. 2 Woodstock. Both games will be streamed live on theday.com.

At Montville High School, the Division II boys' and girls' soccer championships are on the line when No. 1 Lyman Memorial plays No. 2 Windham in the boys' final at 4:30 p.m., followed by the girls' championship between No. 1 Montville and No. 2 Stonington. This will be the third meeting of the season between the Indians and Bears, who split a pair of one-goal games during the regular season.

The final conference postseason events will be held on Friday and Saturday when East Lyme hosts the ECC diving championship at 5 p.m., followed by the swimming championship at 2:30 p.m. Saturday at UConn Avery Point in Groton.

    Schedule changes

    • A forecast calling for rain and possible thunderstorms Friday has forced the rescheduling of a number of events involving local schools to Thursday.

The CIAC previously announced its State Open cross country championships at Wickham Park in Manchester will be held Thursday instead of Friday with the boys' race scheduled to start at 2 p.m., followed by the girls' race at 2:45.

In addition, two football games originally scheduled for Friday have been moved to Thursday and a third will get an earlier start on Friday. The New London at Ledyard game will be played at 7 p.m. Thursday, the Valley Regional/Old Lyme at Rockville game will be played at 6:30 p.m. Thursday and the NFA at Waterford game will still be played on Friday, but will start at 4:30 p.m.

Mitchell College also announced its New England Collegiate Conference men's soccer tournament semifinal against Eastern Nazarene, orginally scheduled to be played on campus at 2 p.m. Friday, has been moved to Connecticut College's Silfen Field and will begin at noon.
