Banff Film Fest brings environmental movies to Garde

Nomad Kazakh boys in Altai, western Mongolia, in “Boy Nomad” (aAron Munson)

It’s amazing how films can take you away. The environmental movies that are part of the annual Banff Mountain Film Festival not only bring viewers to new places and introduce them to faraway cultures, but they can also give them a bird’s eye view of the world and the rush of moving fast — whether down a snowy slope or across mountain peaks or atop rolling waves.

In short, it’s all about a thrilling sense of adventure.

The Banff festival returns to the Garde Arts Center on Sunday with its 2018/19 World Tour.

What you will see includes …

“Far Out: Kai Jones”: The 11-year-old Kai doesn’t just ski; he jumps and flips and executes acrobatic tricks.

“Surface”: Ben Thouard went inside waves to find a fresh take on surf photography.

“Ice Palms”: Two pals spend five weeks self-propelling — we’re talking bikepacking and skiing — their way across the Alps.

“Boy Nomad”: A 9-year-old boy who lives in Mongolia’s Altai Mountains with his nomad family deals with a difficult winter migration.

“For the Love of Mary”: George Etzweiler, at the age of 97, wants to run to the Mount Washington summit in honor of his late wife; they were wed for 68 years.

Banff Mountain Film Festival, 6:30 p.m. Sunday, Garde Arts Center, 325 State St., New London; $19-$31; (860) 444-7373.
