Sun down Liberty in preseason finale

Jonquel Jones scored 21 as the Connecticut Sun beat the New York Liberty on Sunday, 98-79, to conclude their WNBA preseason at the Times Union Center in Albany, N.Y.

Jones made all five of her 3-pointers as 13 of 14 Sun players scored. Courtney Williams added 12 points, five rebounds and five assists, and Jasmine Thomas scored 12 with four rebounds and two steals.

Kia Nurse scored 25 for the Liberty.

Connecticut opened the second half with a 10-0 run to pull away. Jones and Shekinna Stricklen both made 3-pointers during that stretch to give the Sun a 53-40 lead with 7 minutes, 40 seconds left in the quarter.

The Sun must make two cuts by Thursday to adhere to the league’s 12-woman roster maximum. Free agent Emma Cannon and rookies Bridget Carleton and Natisha Hiedeman are those most likely on the bubble.

Hiedeman made 3 of 5 field goals for six points in 13 minutes. Carleton made one of four shots for two points with two steals in seven minutes. Cannon did not score.

Connecticut opens the regular season Saturday against the Washington Mystics at Mohegan Sun Arena (7:30 p.m.).
