    Local roundup: Ledyard boys' soccer rallies to win opener against East Lyme

    Ledyard — Ledyard High School scored three unanswered goals to beat East Lyme 3-1 Thursday on opening day for high school boys' soccer.

    Finn Power opened the scoring for East Lyme before Daimon Pollard, Ben Fieldsen and Nick Washington scored for Ledyard. Ledyard's Wes Hughes and Elliott Smith each added an assist and goalie Blake McLeod had 12 saves. 

    In other games:

    • Kevin Vazquez and Fabricio Gonzalez each chipped in two goals in Grasso Tech's season-opening 6-0 shutout of Putnam. Adam Chiocola had a goal and an assist and Meynor Sanchez also scored while goalie Joel Potter made one save to earn the shutout.

    • Brendan Montano and Brady Stevenson each had two goals in Xavier's 8-0 win over Norwich Free Academy. NFA goalie Xavier Epperson had six saves.

    • Fitch scored two goals in each half on the way to a 4-1 win over Woodstock Academy. Sebastian Duffy scored three goals and Douglas Cardona had one while Seamus Greaves, Timmy Lynch and Peter Petropoulous each had an assist for the Falcons. Goalie Ramiro Zavalo made three saves.

    Girls' soccer

    • Meredith Healy, a sophomore, had two goals and two assists for East Lyme in a 6-1 victory over Stonington. Stonington opened the scoring on a first-half goal by Rachel Sabbadini for the 1-0 lead, but East Lyme tied it prior to halftime on a goal by Emma Belleville assisted by Healy. East Lyme then scored five unanswered goals in the second half, the first by freshman Abigail Belleville, also assisted by Healy. Emma Belleville scored again to make it 3-1, followed by goals from Caitlin White and two by Healy. Abigail Belleville and Margaret Dunne added assists for the Vikings.

    • Emilia Skrabacz scored two goals and Lynaisha Quinones added one in New London's 3-2 win over Windham. 

    • Ledyard defeated Tourtellotte 2-1 behind goals from Lexi LaPerle and Abby Millbach. LaPerle also added an assist and goalie Savannah Wahrer had six saves for the Colonels. 

    • Caroline Codner scored three goals while Lindsay Clement added a goal and an assist in St. Bernard's 5-1 win over Wheeler. Emily Hernandez also scored a goal while Victoria Hannaford, Elizabeth Hannaford, Erin Londregan and Alexis Duyan each had an assist for the Saints. Brooke Dowrey had an unassisted goal for Wheeler.

    • Kacy Cook's second-half goal propelled Lyman Memorial past Montville 1-0. Lyman goalie Morgan Zaffaglia had five saves and Montville's Julia Beaupre had 11.

    • Madeline Southers and Avery Lyon scored for Fitch in a 4-2 loss to Killingly. Abbie Burgess scored two goals for Killingly.

    Women's soccer

    • Senior Lydia VanWinkle scored her second career goal to lift Coast Guard Academy past Salve Regina University 1-0. VanWinkle's game-winning strike came at the 55:03 mark. Freshman goalie Sarah Schollenberger earned the shutout by making seven saves for the Bears (1-4), who snapped a four-game losing streak.

    H.S. volleyball

    • Waterford went five sets to beat Plainfield, 25-20, 25-17, 23-25, 24-26 and 15-2. Ryleigh Gonyo led the Lancers with 19 kills while Rachel Miller had 11 kills and Sabrina Kobyluck chipped in 46 assists and Briana Muckle added 18 digs.

    • Paige Phaneuf had six digs, five points and one ace in Norwich Tech's 3-0 loss to Wilcox Tech. Game scores were 25-16, 25-11 and 25-18.

    • Maddie Cann had six kills and five digs in Old Lyme's 3-0 loss to Cromwell in Shoreline Conference action. Game scores were 25-8, 25-9 and 25-21. Leah Fouquettee had six digs, two aces and two kills for Old Lyme.

    • Ledyard beat Innovation 29-27, 25-23, 25-12. Kaitlin Flynn had four aces and eight digs, Tajeah Winston had six kills and Kira Kassim had five kills for Ledyard.

    College volleyball

    • Coast Guard Academy defeated Merchant Marine 3-1 with game scores of 27-25, 25-15, 21-25 and 25-18. Amanda Dake had 10 kills and 10 digs and Veronica Hine chipped in 24 digs for the Bears (6-3).

    Field hockey

    • Caitlyn Maiolo and Dylan Parks each scored a second-half goal in East Lyme's 2-0 shutout of Fitch. Kristen Healy had an assist and goalie Lydia Swan made two saves for the Vikings. Fitch goalie Hailie Kesterson had 10 saves.

    • Dillon Griscome contributed two goals while Sandy McGugan, Teagan O'Brien, Ellie Korinek and Grace Todisco each had one in Stonington's 6-1 win over Waterford. Jess San Juan scored for Waterford.

    Swimming

    • Gloria Ng won the 100-yard butterfly and 100 breaststroke for NFA in a 99-78 nonconference loss to Windsor. The 400 freestyle relay team of Dylan Levine, Quincie Quint, Riley Levine, Ng finished first for the Wildcats and Michaela Ryan qualified for Class LL state diving meet with a score of 168.20.

    H.S. girls' cross country

    • Waterford opened its season by going 2-1 at a quad-meet on Tuesday. The Lancers beat host Killingly 15-50 in an ECC Div. II meet, lost to Woodstock 16-47 and beat Wheeler 19-43. Sarah Johnson was the top finisher for Waterford, coming in fifth at 23:56. Lulu Dominey was the top finisher for Wheeler, coming in seventh in 24:18. Wheeler (1-2) lost to Woodstock 15-50 and beat Killingly 15-50.
