The 11 presidents of the colleges in the New England Small College Athletic Conference, which includes Connecticut College, announced on Friday that the fall sports season has been canceled.

"Over the last several months, NESCAC institutions have been focused on the safe reopening of their campuses this fall,'' the conference said in a statement. "Member institutions have recently announced plans for the upcoming year, with the health and well-being of students, faculty, staff and the broader community for foremost concern.

"In keeping with public health guidance, each of our institutions has put in place physical distancing protocols, limits on travel on and off campus, and limits on the size of on-campus gatherings. Consistent with these policies, the NESCAC presidents have decided unanimously, though with great reluctance, that NESCAC conference competition for fall sports must be canceled for fall 2020.''

Other NESCAC members are Amherst College, Bates College, Bowdoin College, Colby College, Hamilton College, Middlebury College, Trinity College, Tufts University, Wesleyan University and Williams Colllege.

UConn testing

• UConn athletics has performed 150 COVID-19 tests on student-athletes since June 19 and zero tests have come back positive.

"While this is good news, it is certainly no time to relax the standards and protocols we have in place to ensure the safety of our student-athletes and staff," director of athletics David Benedict said. "We will remain vigilant throughout this process. I'd like to commend our public health officials and medical staff for planning and implementing these protocols while also passing along my gratitude to our student-athletes and staff for adhering to the guidelines. It is my expectation that a future positive test is inevitable but I am confident that the procedures we have in place will mitigate any community spread." 

College honors

• Coast Guard Academy had five student-athletes honored by The College Swimming & Diving Coaches Association of America, named to the Scholar All-American team for the 2019-20 season. The award recognizes students who achieved a grade point average of 3.5 or higher and were invited to compete at their respective national championship.

From the men's team, Devin McClure (mechanical engineering) and Joe Rodriguez (electrical engineering) were named to the first team while Sam Chapman (mechanical engineering) and Eric Fuhs (operations research) earned honorable mention honors. Taylor Young (marine and environmental science), a member of the women's team, was also an honorable mention pick.

• Nine student-athletes from the UConn Avery Point have been honored with All-Academic Team status from the National Junior College Athletic Association for their work in the classroom.

Aidan Brennan and Cole Potts of New London, Jason Ostrowski and Corey Plasky of the baseball team, Old Lyme's Abby Stone of the women's basketball team and Ryan Dull of New London, J.R. Gandenberger of East Lyme, Mitchell Holdmeyer and Dan LaBelle of the men's basketball were honored. All-Academic Team status is determined based off of grade reports from the recently completed academic year.

Potts was named the Second-Team after posting a cumulative GPA between 3.8 and 3.99 in the 2019-20 academic year. Brennan, Dull, Gandenberger, Holdmeyer, LaBelle, Ostrowski, Plasky and Stone each registered a GPA ranging from 3.6 to 3.79.

All three Avery Point teams were also recognized with All-Academic Team honors. The men's basketball team was recognized with this award for the second year in a row. The Pointers posted a team grade point average of 3.23 during the recently completed academic year — a mark that was higher than its total from a year ago which was the fourth-highest in the nation among men's basketball programs. The women's basketball team notched a 3.03 cumulative grade point average and the baseball team checked in at 3.01.

• Tyler Mikula struck out five of the six batters he faced, including striking out the side in the bottom of the ninth, as the Pirates got past the Sonics on Thursday night, 6-4, in nine innings in the Eastern Connecticut Major League. Pieter Khoury went 3-for-3 with three runs for the Pirates (3-3), who scored twice in the top of the ninth. Dan Pierce doubled for the Sonics.

• Logan Megewa drew a bases loaded walk to score Troy Stefanski and give the Clams a 4-3 win over the Pirates in eight innings on Wednesday night. The Clams lost a 3-0 lead in the seventh inning. Stefanski singled to lead off the eighth and went to third on a passed ball. The Pirates then intentionally loaded the bases. Bryce Mileski struck out the side in the bottom of the eighth to earn the win in relief for the Clams. Stefanski had two hits, three runs and two stolen bases for the Clams and Matt Gregory doubled. Starter Andrew Fogarty gave up two hits and an earned run over three innings and struck out six for the Pirates while Brian McGugan had two hits.
