A monthly labyrinth walk series will be presented by Niantic Community Church at McCook’s Point Park in East Lyme beginning Saturday, July 24. The walk will take place from 6-7 p.m. and is offered with support of the East Lyme Parks and Recreation Department that enabled the creation of the seven-circuit labyrinth in 2019.

The theme for the first walk is an introduction to the labyrinth and relaxation.

As a walking meditation, and a metaphor for life’s journey, the labyrinth has been around since medieval times and has been a tool for prayer across many faith traditions. Each month the walk at McCook’s will have a different theme and the July walk will be guided by labyrinth facilitator Joanne Moore, who was instrumental in creating this particular labyrinth.

“As a physical therapist, I recognize the connection between body and spirit. We learn and grow through the use of our five senses, plus our kinesthetic sense. All the senses are utilized while walking the labyrinth at McCook’s,” said Moore in a release. “The sounds of surf and sea birds, the smells of the salt air, and the sensation of feet walking on a path already well-trodden by others, the visual beauty, all contribute to the whole brain being engaged in this meditation.

“The beauty of the labyrinth invites one in ... to step outside the hectic pace of everyday life, and for just a few minutes, reflect on life’s large and small concerns. I hope that this six-month series of exploring labyrinth meditation will help people understand the history and the power of this practice.”

The walk is free and all are welcome. Chairs are recommended and no reservations are necessary. In the event of rain, the walk will take place indoors at Niantic Community Church on its canvas labyrinth.

Future dates will correspond with the full moon and include Aug. 22, and 4-5 p.m. on Sept. 21, Oct. 20, Nov. 19 and Dec. 19.
