Mystic — Mystic Seaport has announced that when it reopens its grounds on May 23, admission will be free through May 29. Donations, though, are welcome.

While all exhibits and ships will be closed, visitors can stroll the museum grounds.

The museum, which has been closed due to the COVID-19 pandemic since March, will be open on May 23 to 25 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and on May 26 to 29 from noon to 4 p.m.

"We're excited to start the reopening process. This is just the first step," museum spokesman Dan McFadden said.

He said that initial capacity will be limited to 250 people. If that goes well, he said the museum has the ability to allow up to 800 people on the site while still ensuring proper social distancing takes place.

All visitors will be required to wear masks and observe 6-foot social distancing at all times. Visitors are urged to check the museum website or social media feeds before leaving their homes.

Visitors also are asked to park in the south lot and use the south entrance. The museum store and food services will be closed, so visitors are reminded to bring their own snacks, water and hand sanitizer. Restrooms will be open but limited to one person or family at a time.

A complete list of instructions can be found in the reopening announcement at mysticseaport.org/news.
