The Connecticut Sun waived forwards Stephanie Jones and Beatrice Mompremier on Wednesday as WNBA teams set their rosters before the start of the regular season on Friday.

Teams may roster up to 12 players. Connecticut has 11 due to the salary cap, which is common amongst the league because the top players take up much of a team’s cap space.

Mompremier was drafted 20th overall (second round) by the Los Angeles Sparks in 2020 and was later waived. She signed with the Sun on June 23 of that same year and averaged nine minutes in 62 regular season and playoff games over the past two seasons.

Jones went undrafted in 2020, signed a training camp contract with Connecticut and earned a roster spot. She played in 19 games last season averaging 5.3 minutes.

Seven of the Sun’s players presently rostered were with the team last season — wings DeWanna Bonner and DiJonai Carrington, guards Natisha Hiedeman and Jasmine Thomas, and forwards Brionna and Jonquel Jones and Alyssa Thomas.

Guard Courtney Williams signed a free agent contract with Connecticut this offseason after playing with the Atlanta Dream the previous two years. She started for the Sun from 2017-19 and was traded in Feb. 2020 to Atlanta at her request so she could be closer to home.

Guards Yvonne Anderson and Nia Clouden and forward Joyner Holmes are new to Connecticut. Clouden was drafted 12th overall (first round) in April’s WNBA draft out of Michigan State. Anderson and Holmes had been signed to training camp contracts.

The Sun open their 20th season at the New York Liberty on Saturday.
