A 33-year-old man serving three years in prison for multiple burglaries in the Guilford area was sentenced to an additional year in prison Wednesday for stealing more than $200,000 worth of jewelry from a Salem home.

Joseph Ingraldi was helping his mother, Rita Ingraldi, clean the home on Forest Drive in Salem when he stole the gold and diamond items, according to prosecutor Lawrence J. Tytla. Police learned Ingraldi pawned the stolen items at a Wallingford store. The homeowner, who reported the theft in April 2012, received a substantial amount of money through an insurance claim, "but that doesn't replace the sentimental value," Tytla said.

Ingraldi had been sentenced a day earlier in Superior Court in New Haven to 10 years in prison, suspended after three years served, followed by five years probation for a string of similar crimes, including one at the home of a Superior Court judge, according to court documents. He had been stealing the items while helping his mother, Rita Ingraldi, who had a cleaning business for years.

Judge Susan B. Handy told Ingraldi his behavior was "despicable" as she imposed the additional one year prison sentence for the Salem burglary.

"The thing I found so offensive about this behavior was what you did to your mother," Handy said. "She had been a loyal employee of all these people."
