Ledyard man to serve two years for possession of child pornography

James M. Demay, 28, pleaded guilty to child pornography charges Tuesday in New London Superior Court and will be sentenced May 13 to two years in prison. Demay, of Ledyard and formerly of Groton, pleaded guilty to second-degree possession of child pornography. He will be on probation for 10 years after his release and will be required to register as a sex offender during that time.

The state police Computer Crimes Unit began an investigation of Demay in October 2013, when they received information about child pornography sharing over the Internet. Police said the activity was traced back to Demay’s apartment, 25 Broad Street Extension, Groton.

In January 2014, the Computer Crimes Unit with the assistance of Groton City police executed a search and seizure warrant at the apartment. Confronted at his job at the Electric Boat visitor center in New London, Demay admitted he had been viewing child pornography for the past five years, according to a court document. He said he knew it was wrong and that he never had sexual contact with a minor. Police examined his computer and found multiple files depicting young girls engaged in sexually explicit activity.

Demay is free on a $150,000 bond pending sentencing. Prosecutor Theresa Anne Ferryman and defense attorney Gregg W. Wagman worked out a plea agreement during pretrial discussions of the case with Judge Hillary B. Strackbein.
