    Gluten Schmuten

So, you know in movies where the baby throws up all over the unsuspecting mom/dad/non-parent entity and it is soooooo ridiculous and it shoots out at fantastical speeds and in fantastical amounts and is just so over the top and stuff like that doesn't happen in real life and why, oh why, do movies need to exaggerate so much? Yeah, Little Lady does that. Just like what you see in the movies. She also does something similar with her bum. I have never experienced projectile poop and thankfully that is not a very common occurrence.

The explosive vomiting is usually preceded by some gagging and retching so I have a small warning and am able to position both the baby and myself to incur the least amount of damage. I usually try to take one for the team, because changing my outfit is way easier than changing Little Lady's. I would say that this can happen once a day at most, and often less than that.

And you know what? It just doesn't seem right to me. My pediatrician (whom I love and have no complaints about) says as long as the vomit is white or off white in color (which it is) that it is OK and it is just her immature (my word, not his) digestive system getting used to things. But...I don't know...Little Man did not vomit (spit-up, yes....but this is full-fledged stomach emptying vomit), he wasn't gassy like she is (this girl toots like crazy...and smells BAD...and if I don't get her to burp before I put her down, I will live to regret it...) and my instincts tell me something isn't agreeing with her...and unfortunately that "something" has to be coming from me.

I would take her to my naturopath, but crappy maternity leave, coupled with crappy sick/vacation time equals worse than crappy pay and I don't want to pay my out-of-network deductible if I don't have to (I will save my maternity leave rants and my insurance rants for another time). So I am self-diagnosing because I am smart and I trust my instincts. As of tomorrow, I am going gluten-free.

I actually don't eat a ton of gluten since Little Man went gluten-free (for his eczema, which has worked wonderfully and the nice thing is we don't have to be super-strict with it now), but I am going to cut it all out. I also wonder if the gluten has something to do with Little Lady's baby acne that has been raging of late (yes, I think hormone levels contribute to that as well). When Little Man was an infant he had VERY bad eczema and I wonder if my gluten intake contributed to that (considering how good his skin has been since we cut it out), so I had already been thinking that I may have to cute out gluten if Little Lady started having skin issues.

We will see what unfolds with Little Lady's intestinal issues. I am certain that there is something I am eating that is not agreeing with her, and it is just a matter of figuring out what. The next thing I will try will be dairy (I actually went dairy-free with Little Man for a month to see if that helped his skin, and it didn't).

I am curious to hear if any of you had similar issues and what you tried...anyone go gluten-free with their breast-fed infant? Let me know...and I will keep you posted on my gluten-free travels.
