Welcome to New London, college students

This week’s Night & Day is concentrating on all things New London, with a particular focus on places that might intrigue the students who are returning to colleges in the Whaling City at this time of year.

A little about those schools ...

Connecticut College, whose address is 270 Mohegan Ave., boasts around 1,900 students this fall. According to Conn, it is “a thriving coeducational liberal arts institution known for its unique interdisciplinary curriculum called Connections, which connects everything students do — courses in and outside their major, study abroad experiences, internships, extracurriculars — into a meaningful pathway that allows them to synthesize different perspectives, solve complex problems and contribute to the public good.”

You might want to watch some of Conn’s men’s soccer games. The team, which won the Division III National Championship in 2021, is currently ranked #1 in the country.

Or you could check out Conn’s guest artist series, which features outstanding performers in public shows. Here’s just a sampling: Actress Stephanie J. Block, who won a Tony in 2019 for playing Cher in “The Cher Show,” will be in concert on Oct. 1; the Soweto Gospel Choir will perform on Dec. 10; and Silkroad Ensemble will play on Jan. 27.

Mitchell College, at 437 Pequot Ave., has 560 students enrolled this year. From Mitchell comes this information: “Celebrating and developing the power of unique minds, our mission is to provide access to higher education for a widely diverse student body while offering unparalleled support and opportunity for students to achieve their goals.”

Among the college’s successes in sports: Mitchell’s baseball team went to the 2021 NCAA Division III Regionals.

You can see a theatrical performance at the school’s Red Barn or drop by Michael’s Dairy, which is an iconic ice cream shop.

The Mitchell grounds were once the summer home for Alfred and Annie Tiffany Mitchell; he is the college’s namesake, and she is the daughter of the man who founded the renowned Tiffany & Co. jewelry store.

Among the famous folks who have come to Mitchell: astronomer Carl Sagan lectured at the college in 1965, and Chuck Berry gave a concert in 1966.

Then there’s the Coast Guard Academy, at 31 Mohegan Ave., which has more than 1,000 cadets in its Corps of Cadets.

With female representation a big subject right now, let’s note that women make up 43% of the Class of 2026 and 41% of the entire Corps of Cadets.

And Capt. Jessica Rozzi-Ochs recently became the first female commanding officer of the Barque Eagle.
