    Destination: comedy

    Ben Bailey (submitted)

Not to be particularly mean, but I’ve always thought that the quickest way to solve perplexing existential problems — ecology, disease, warfare — was to forget about the “experts” in those fields and simply hire the folks who conceptualize game shows. Those brainiacs can come up with ANYTHING and make it work.

This explains the otherwise unlikely existence and success of game shows such as “Cash Cab.” The concept is that unsuspecting taxi customers enter the titular vehicle and are informed they have the choice of forgetting about their destination — daughter’s med school graduation, vacation flight to Alaska, job interview, the Chipotle on 32nd Street — and answer increasingly difficult questions posed by a zany driver for cash!

Well … the host/taxi driver in “Cash Cab” is the very funny comedian Ben Bailey, and indeed his main gig has always been in standup. He performs Saturday at The Kate in Old Saybrook — and, no, don’t ask him to drive you home after the show.

Ben Bailey, 8 p.m. Saturday, Katharine Hepburn Cultural Arts Center, 300 Main St., Old Saybrook; thekate.org, (860) 510-0453.
