Things to see
In between or after all the holiday gatherings, you’ll have downtime. Or you’ll have time you just want to get away. What to do?
Here are some options.
You can head to local art museums, which are open but with holiday hours.
The most Christmasy exhibit is “Holiday Magic” at the Florence Griswold Museum in Old Lyme through Dec. 31. Huge Christmas trees decorated with artist-painted palettes are placed in the museum’s Krieble Gallery, which also boasts the exhibition “Abandon in Place: The Worlds of Anna Audette.” The Florence Griswold House is decked out with themed trees for the holidays as well. The museum is closed Dec. 24 and 25, but regular hours are 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Tues.-Sun.
The Lyman Allyn Art Museum in New London is featuring “Elizabeth Enders: A Different Time, A Different Place,” which focuses on the art by New London native Enders, and “Building Collections: Recent Acquisitions.” The Lyman Allyn is closed Dec. 24-26 but reopens Dec. 27 with regular hours of 10 a.m.-5 p.m. and last admission at 4 p.m.
The Slater Museum on the Norwich Free Academy campus of course has its cast collection as an attraction, but you also have time to catch two catch-them-while-you-can exhibitions: “Joe Gualtieri: The Artistry of Friendship,” which ends Jan. 5, and “Lynn Curlee: 50 Years of Art and Illustration, Retrospective,” through Dec. 29. The Slater is closed Dec. 23-26 and reopens Dec. 27. Hours are 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Mon., Wed.-Fri. and Sat.
Check each venue’s website for New Year’s holiday closings and hours.
