    Coast Guard Band plays Sunday

Commander Adam Williamson, director of the United States Coast Guard Band (submitted)

I’m frankly intimidated by the United States Coast Guard Band, and not just because of their musical excellence.

In a preview of their Christmas concert last month, I jokingly lamented their plan to perform “Sleigh Ride” because of the tune’s de rigueur “clip clop” horsey sound effects.

The Coasties hilariously retaliated by making and posting a Spielberg-strength video dissecting the nuances of “clip clop” percussion. I was and remain humbled!

You’ll not find me “doubting” this ensemble’s set lists ever again — which leads me to their free concert Sunday afternoon in Leamy Hall on the Academy’s New London campus. Billed as “Origins,” the performance, under the direction of Commander Adam Williamson and with remarks from visiting Ninth District Commander Rear Admiral Jon P. Hickey, is a celebration of military band history.

This program includes works by William Schuman, William Billings, John Philip Sousa, Gustav Holst and John Williams, with an original composition by the USCG Band’s own MUC Sean Nelson.

And if they clip-clop through the whole thing, it’s fine with me.

United States Coast Guard Band, 2 p.m. Sunday, Leamy Hall, United States Coast Guard Academy, 15 Mohegan Ave., New London; free; uscg.mil/community/band, (860) 701-6826.
