G.E. Smith and Jim Weider return to the Kate

    Jim Weider (submitted)

Rock fans who attend a lot of shows are familiar with stage setups that often include several guitars on stands back by the amplifiers – each at the ready for when the virtuoso guitar player changes axes depending on sonic requirements for any given tune.

I once counted at least a dozen guitars onstage for Rick Nielson of Cheap Trick, and U2’s The Edge is another guy whose roadies probably sigh when they have to load and unload his touring guitar cases.

This is probably not a situation you’ll encounter at The Kate Sunday when G.E. Smith (Bob Dylan, Hall & Oates, “Saturday Night Live” band) and Jim Weider (The Band, Levon Helm) perform. After all, the two longtime touring partners are billed as “Masters of the Telecaster” for a reason: The only instrument either needs to coax the myriad tones or flurries of notes their respective artistry is … a single Fender Telecaster.

Twelve strings, four hands a pair of Teles. See it, hear it, and believe.

Masters of the Telecaster, 7 p.m. Sunday, Katharine Hepburn Cultural Arts Center, 300 Main St., Old Saybrook; $49; thekate.org, (860) 510-0453.
