Connecticut College’s 2023-24 Guest Artists Series continues with a solo performance piece by a Congolese artist and activist inspired by his time being imprisoned and sentenced to death.

Toto M. Kisaku will perform “Requiem for an Electric Chair” Friday at Conn College.

Kisaku was granted political asylum in the U.S. in 2018. “Requiem for an Electric Chair” had its worlds premiere that same year at the International Festival of Arts & Ideas in New Haven.

Kisaku was arrested and jailed in Congo in 2015 for writing a play about child abuse by churches in his country and how the government was complicit. He managed to escape with the help of a guard who had seen his performances before his imprisonment.

“Requiem for an Electric Chair” is “a testament to the human spirit. Through his art, Kisaku defied oppression and corruption, revealing a story of courage and survival,” according to Conn College publicity.

“Requiem for an Electric Chair,” 7:30 p.m. Friday, Athey Center, Palmer Auditorium, Connecticut College, 270 Mohegan Ave., New London; tickets $18 ($16 for seniors, $9 for students); (860) 439-2787, onstage.conncoll.edu.
