    The sound of ‘Wildflowers’

As this bet is being written, the weather forecast calls for the most snow we’ve experienced in these parts since … gosh! Since the Ice Age!

If it happens, the event shouldn’t affect Sunday’s concert by the United States Coast Guard Band at Leamy Hall on the organization’s New London campus. Snowplows and all that.

However, that the concert is billed “Musical Wildflowers” may seem a bit premature — even if it’s a metaphor and has nothing to do with actual gardening or vernal blooms.

Rather, the program celebrates folk music, and conductor/Chief Warrant Officer Jeffrey Spenner will lead the outfit through modern works (Nkeiru Okoye, Neal Endicott) as well as classics by Percy Grainger, William Grant Still and John Philip Sousa.

Oh, and euphonium soloist Musician 1st Class Patrick Nyren will be featured on Jean-Baptiste Arban’s “Carnival of Venice.”

United States Coast Guard Band, 2 p.m. Sunday, Leamy Hall, United States Coast Guard Academy, 15 Mohegan Ave., New London; free; uscg.mil/community/band, (860) 701-6826.
