Saturday will mark the second annual Mystic Celebration of Black History Month Program, highlighted by readings by community members of their own writing or of work by Black authors that have moved them.

The event is presented by the Greater Mystic Chamber of Commerce in partnership with the Mystic & Noank Library and community leaders.

The program will start at the Mystic Flag Pole and Anchor, where Connecticut state troubadour Nekita Waller will perform “Lift Every Voice and Sing,” known as the Black National Anthem.

The program then moves inside Union Baptist Church. Kevin Booker Jr., a Mitchell College and Connecticut College professor who has the company Booker Empowerment, will host this celebration of Black history. Readers have up to three minutes to introduce their piece, explaining why they chose it or how a certain author inspired them, and to read it.

Performers will include children’s book author, artist and performer Won-Ldy Paye; drummer and teacher of djembe, congas and percussion Matt Dean; and the aforementioned Nekita Waller.

Among the speakers: Morgan Tuck, former UConn Husky, WNBA player and now an executive with the Connecticut Sun, and Malik Champlain, founder of Passion, Hunger, Drive.
