Schemitzun happens this weekend
Celebrate Native American traditions at Schemitzun this weekend.
The Mashantucket Pequot Tribe uses this annual event to “usher in the 2023 harvest season and give thanks to the Creator for our rich heritage while honoring our ancestors, warriors, veterans, and Elders.”
The festivities on the Mashantucket Pequot Cultural Grounds feature everything from dance competitions and drumming to Native American cuisine.
Visitors can peruse arts and crafts that are all are made by certified Native American tribal members and are accepted to Schemitzun by invitation only.
Folks can also watch wampum making and open-fire cooking demonstrations, as well as hear storytelling, as the Eastern Woodland Village exhibit.
As for that aforementioned cuisine, it ranges from local fish to wild game to contemporary offerings like Indian tacos.
