It's all so good at Milagro Café in Stonington

Milagro Crispy Goat Cheese Salad (Ann Baldelli/Special to The Day)

What to tell you about first? The ceviche, tacos, chile rellenos or enchiladas? They’re all so good at Milagro Café in Stonington borough, but it would be a misstep if we didn’t immediately proclaim the virtues of the Milagro margaritas.

OMG. They are the best. Especially the Fresh Margarita, $13.50, served with or without salt on the rim of the glass, a generous pour of tequila and fresh squeezed juice from lemons, limes and oranges. It’s delightful, and after the pour, they leave the shaker with what’s left inside so you can freshen up your cocktail.

If you want something more daring, there are always specials, such as the fresh kiwi margarita, or another made with ginger and pineapple, or one with strawberry and thyme. The beverage menu changes regularly and includes beer and much more, but this is a food review, so let’s go there.

A staple on the Milagro menu and a family favorite is the Baha Fish Tacos, $17.50 for three overstuffed soft taco shells filled with beer-battered fish and habanero slaw, and served with a side of rice. The fish is warm and tender and just lightly battered. Every bite is a tasty mouthful, and it’s nearly impossible to finish the plate. You will probably take one, or two, of the tacos home.

If fish isn’t a favorite, they also make Tacos De Pollo, $17, with chicken, onion and cilantro, or Carne Asada Tacos, $18.50, substituting steak for the chicken.

The Enchiladas Al Horno for $17 also gets top billing in our family. This scrumptious filling of spinach, mushrooms, tomato, and chipotle gets rolled or smothered in a tortilla and topped with drizzled queso. It’s a lot to eat and is served with sides of rice and beans.

Maybe the reason we can never finish our entrees at Milagro is because we can’t resist the starters. Among our favorites are the nachos, about $10, the chicken wings, $13, the guacamole and chips, $11.50, and, topping the list, the tuna ceviche, $14.

There are always specials, so the nachos may be beef one day and pork the next, and the price may vary.

Recently, there was a Crispy Goat Cheese Salad, $11, offered as a special, and it wasn’t only pretty on the plate, but it was also flavorful. Cold, crisp salad greens were sprinkled with cheese, and a lightly deep-fried goat cheese ball was nestled on the side.

The guacamole comes chunky or smooth and always tastes like fresh avocados — that’s the point, right? — flavored with onion, tomato, lime juice, garlic and other good things. The chips to ladle it up are crisp and warm.

Part of the fun at Milagro is the waitstaff, who are super helpful and friendly. If you want to be entertained, sit at the bar and watch the margarita-making madness and listen to the lively banter between the barkeep and waitresses.

Martin Zavala is the proprietor of Milagro, and he is opening another location, Zavala Mexican Bistro, at 135 Boston Post Road in East Lyme, in the space previously occupied by Rebekah’s. It was Martin Zavala and his late wife, Genine, who owned Manana Café in Groton and Zavala’s in downtown New London near the train station.

Folks in East Lyme should be thrilled to have a Milagro clone in their town. Mexican fare may not be for everyone, but if it is something you enjoy, they have a knack for it at Milagro.

That tuna ceviche I mentioned is a case in point. The diced tuna with tomato, onion, cilantro, olive oil, and lime, is perfectly blended with a tang of citrus, a mild tuna flavor, and the kick of the cilantro.

Whether you try the empanadas, or a burrito, or the pan-seared cod with a pineapple salsa, the food at this eatery never disappoints.
