Looking for colleagues? Coworking offers a new way to network

New London resident Jessica Hill is spreading the word on an alternative work environment for independent professionals that combines the benefits of a networking community with the advantages of working away from home.

Yes, you read that right. Working from home can provide flexibility, but it can also be isolating, Hill said. Under the concept of "coworking," freelancers, entrepreneurs, nonprofits and independent contractors share a workspace — whether it be a leased office or multipurpose public area. The goal, she said, is to get creative, talented people together in the same room. And get them talking.

"There are so many benefits to coming together and collaborating. Especially for freelancers or people wanting to start their own business," she explained. "It's a very organic thing; you build relationships. You meet people, and maybe you make that connection" that can help you grow professionally, she added.

Coworking sites vary in terms of complexity. Some are formal offices where professionals reserve their desk space and chip in to keep a coffee machine maintained; while others provide a more casual, 'drop-in and plug in your laptop' atmosphere.

While the concept is not new — coworking has been popular for years in cities like San Francisco and Seattle — it is just getting off the ground locally, Hill said. Her goal is to raise awareness, build "a community of coworkers," and eventually secure a space, preferably in the downtown area.
