    H.S. roundup: NFA's Allyson Lewis wins State Open indoor high jump title

    New Haven — Norwich Free Academy's Allyson Lewis captured the girls' high jump title during the CIAC State Open indoor track and field championships on Saturday at the Floyd Little Athletic Center.

    Lewis, a junior, followed her victory in the Class LL meet a week ago by clearing 5 feet, 6 inches again to become the only local champion and helping the Wildcats place 12th in the team standings with 14 points. Her teammate, sophomore Paige Martin, cleared 10-6 to finish fourth in the pole vault.

    Danbury won the Open title with 56 points.

    Other local girls' place-winners were Waterford senior Sophia Podeszwa, who was fifth in the 55-meter hurdles (8.73 seconds) and Fitch senior Madison Powe, who was sixth in the 55 dash (7.38).

    Three local relay teams also earned medals with East Lyme's sprint medley team of Saige Deveau, Hannah Gellar, Claire Mason and Julia Bates finishing fifth (4:23.28), Fitch's 4x200 relay team of Powe, Lily Johnson, Egypt Burley and Abigail Rogers finishing seventh (1:49.13), and Stonington's 4x800 team of Emma Small, Megan Detwiler, Lindsey Orr and Jessica Detwiler also finishing seventh (9:48.43.0).

    In the boys' meet, NFA's Jahiem Spruill and East Lyme's Dylan Hatajik placed in two individual events apiece to lead the local showing. Spruill tied for third in the high jump (6 feet) and was sixth in the long jump (20-10.25) as the Wildcats finished 12th with 14 points (Greenwich won with 56). Hatajik was second in the 55 dash (6.54) and eighth in the 300 (36.52).

    Stonington's Rhys Hammond also had a solid showing, finishing eighth in the 1,000 (2:35.84) and joining Ben Abely, Graham Johnstone and Blake Edwards to place fifth in the sprint medley relay (3:43.92). Also for the Bears, Cam Whalen placed fourth in the 55 hurdles (7.73)

    In addition, NFA's Chris Weir finished fourth in the pole vault (13 feet), East Lyme's Ryan McCauley was fifth in the 600 (1:24.61), East Lyme's Sam Whittaker was fifth in the 1,600 (4:23.66) and NFA's Armstrong Alcius was eighth in the high jump (6 feet).

    Cheerleading

    • The Eastern Connecticut Conference championship was held at Waterford High School, and three division champions were crowned. New London won the Division I title, host Waterford was the Division II champion and Montville captured the Division III title.

    Girls' basketball

    • Audrey Gavin had 17 points as Old Lyme advanced to the Shoreline Conference tournament semifinals with a 61-53 win over No. 4 North Branford. Jordan Lewis scored 16 for No. 5 Old Lyme, which plays top-ranked Cromwell on Tuesday at Coginchaug at 7 p.m. The win avenged a 46-43 loss at North Branford on Jan. 3. 

    Boys' basketball

    • Trevor Hutchins had 13 points and 23 rebounds, leading Ledyard to a 55-33 win over Stonington. Ken Turner scored 18, E.J. Ahlborn had 10 points and nine rebounds and Jack Woodruff had seven assists for Ledyard (12-7). R.J. Parrilla had 13 points for Stonington, which ends the regular season at 10-10.  

    Hockey

    • Kyle Jacobson had two goals and two assists as the Eastern CT Eagles won their fifth straight game, beating Milford 6-4. Rylin Fowler made 26 saves and Kevin Close, Will Cannella and Evan Tower had a goal and an assist each for the Eagles (12-2-2). Quenten Dean had a goal and Ryan Huta had an assist for the Eagles.

    Boys' fencing

    • Fitch wrapped up a perfect regular season (16-0) and the ECC title in foil with 5-4 wins over East Lyme and New London. Camden Mason of Fitch and Nick Costa of New London each went 5-1. New London beat East Lyme 7-2. In epee, Fitch beat New London 8-1 and East Lyme 6-3 while East Lyme beat New London 7-2. Ron Pfisterer of Fitch was 5-0 with a plus-11 in touches. Fitch (13-1) shared the regular-season title with St. Bernard.

    • St. Bernard clinched a share up the ECC epee title at 13-1 with a 6-3 win over Waterford and a forfeit win over Bacon. In foil, Waterford beat St. Bernard 5-4 and Bacon 6-3 and St. Bernard beat Bacon 5-4. 

    • Ledyard beat Griswold 8-1 and NFA 5-4 in foil with Ledyard's Cameron James going 5-1 with a plus-12 in touches. NFA beat Griswold 7-2. In epee, NFA beat Griswold 8-1 and Ledyard 6-3 while Ledyard beat Griswold 6-3.

    Girls' fencing

    • Fitch wrapped up its fifth straight ECC regular-season title in epee at 13-1 with a 7-2 win over East Lyme. Danielle Millerick of Fitch was 3-0 with a plus-7 in touches. In foil, Fitch beat New London 9-0 and East Lyme 7-2 to finish the regular-season at 12-4. Lauren Rusk of Fitch was 6-0 with a plus-23 in touches. East Lyme beat New London 5-4.

    • NFA wrapped up the ECC title in foil at 15-1 with wins over Griswold (8-1) and Ledyard (7-2) while Ledyard beat Griswold 6-3. Maura Sanchi of NFA was 6-0 with a plus-19 in touches. In epee, NFA beat Griswold 9-0 and Ledyard 6-3 and the Wildcats' Alaina Sminkey plus-25 in touches. Ledyard beat Griswold 6-3.

    • Waterford beat St. Bernard 7-2 and Bacon 6-3 in foil and beat St. Bernard 7-2 and Bacon 6-3 in epee. St. Bernard beat Bacon 5-4 in each match.
