Three local players chosen to CHSCA All-State football team

Jacob Commander of New London and Fitch’s Nick Helbig and Tyler Nelli were all named to the Connecticut High School Coaches’ Association Class L All-State defense, the organization announced Thursday.

Commander was one of five linebackers selected to the Class L defensive team and also played running back, quarterback and punter for the Whalers.

Helbig was a two-way lineman for the Falcons and was one of three defensive linemen chosen to the team.

Nelli was named the punter and was also the quarterback, defensive back and kicker.

There were five teams chosen overall — one for each of the CIAC’s four playoff divisions as well as an elite team of the top 26 players. Players were chosen via votes with every state head coach receiving a ballot.
