    Waterford's Melissa Vine wins state fencing title in girls' epee

    Guilford — Waterford junior Melissa Vine went undefeated to win the girls' epee title during the Connecticut High School Fencing Association state championship tournament on Sunday at Guilford High School.

    Vine and teammate Alex Cole, who finished second girls' foil, were first team all-state selections for the Lancers, who had two other competitors earn top eight finishes — Willow Yang (fifth in foil) and Jenna Morin (sixth in foil) — to also second team all-sate honors.

    They helped Waterford qualify for the state team championships on Saturday at Fitch High School. The Lancers are the No. 1 seed in both epee and foil.

    In addition to the Waterford place-winners, East Lyme's Elizabeth Levandoski finished sixth in foil, Old Lyme/Valley Regional's Megan VanSteenBergen finished seventh in foil and Fitch's Julia Zieminski placed seventh in epee.

    In the boys' tournament, Norwich Free Academy's Kameron Patenaude was sixth in the epee and Fitch's Jack McCrea finished eight.

    Also qualifying for the state team championships on Saturday were NFA (No. 2 seed in girls' foil), East Lyme (No. 8 in girls' foil), Ledyard (No. 3 in girls' epee), Fitch (No. 7 in girls' epee), Griswold (No. 8 in girls' epee), Fitch (No. 1 in boys' epee), NFA (No. 2 in boys' epee) and East Lyme (No. 8 in boys' foil).
