    H.S. roundup: Saints' Britner sets record on home course

    Montville — St. Bernard School senior Serena Britner set a course record to highlight the Saints' 15-50 girls' cross country victory over Lyman Memorial on Saturday morning in the Eastern Connecticut Conference.

    Britner finished the 5K course in 20 minutes, 8 seconds for St. Bernard, which improved to 3-0.

    Lyman (0-3) took the next two spots with Jessica Casey (21:20) and Helen Blakeslee (22:17), and teammate Kristen Goodrich was sixth.

    Scoring for the Saints were were Phoebe Foley (fourth), Lillian Turner (fifth), Katie Power (seventh) and Sophie Addison (eighth).

    In other races:

    • Ledyard beat Waterford 25-30 in the ECC. Ledyard (4-1) took the top two spots with Ella Stephenson winning in 21:56 and Clare Inyang coming in at 22:02 while teammates Victoria Schweitzer (fifth), Alisa Strakova (eighth) and Katherine Harren (ninth) closed out the scoring. Scoring for the Lancers (1-2) were Sarah Johnson (third), Abigail Maynard (fourth), Natalie Lombardi (sixth), Sophie Marcille (seventh) and Anne Seltzer (10th).

    • East Lyme beat Stonington 15-50 in the ECC. The Vikings (2-0) took the top five spots with Izzy Paggioli winning in 20:58, followed by Syd Sager (21:19), Madison Sjostrom (21:39), Kennedy Holsapple (21:47) and Brie Am Ende (22:36). Marin Singletary (11th) was the top finisher for Stonington (0-4).

    Boys' cross country

    • East Lyme, running in its first meet since Oct. 3 due to the coronavirus, beat Stonington 19-40 in the ECC. Luke Anthony of East Lyme (2-0) won with a time of 16:29. Ryan Gruczka of Stonington (0-4) was second (16:41) but the Vikings followed with Fisher Macklin (17:50), Griffith Posgay (18:36), Noah Krishnaswami (18:53) and Nate Bergman (19:05).

    • Ledyard placed four runners in the top six and beat Waterford 26-31 in the ECC. Aidan Pepin of Waterford (2-1) won the race in 17:03 and teammate Sean Corman was second (17:07). Ledyard (3-2) followed with Tevian Elezar (18:13), Nick Johansson (18:16), Chris Evans (18:28) and Connor Doran (18:31) and clinched the win when Auguste Estriplet finished eighth.

    • Lyman Memorial swept an ECC tri-meet, beating St. Bernard 15-46 and Plainfield 18-37. Shane Franson of Lyman (5-1) won the race in 17:57 and was followed by teammates Grayson LeMay (18:16), Kyle McElroy (19:22) and Eamonn McMahon (19:39). Plainfield, which beat St. Bernard 17-41, got a fifth-place finish from Jacob Irons. Jason O'Donnell led St. Bernard (0-4) with a 10th-place finish.

    Girls' soccer

    • Vanessa Benjamin scored six minutes into the game as Stonington beat Waterford 1-0 in the ECC. The goal came off a corner kick from Rachel Sabbadini as the Bears improved to 5-1-1. Mya Rheaume and McKenzie Gregory combined for three saves for Waterford (3-2-1).

    • Ashley Spreng scored three goals as Fitch beat Ledyard 4-0 in the ECC. Hannah Hurley scored a goal, Kelsi Ursini and Carly Zingus had assists and goalie Francesca Foster made eight saves, including two on penalty kicks, for Fitch (3-4). Bella Drummond made 11 saves for Ledyard (2-5-1).

    Boys' soccer

    • Nick Washington scored twice as Ledyard beat Fitch 4-0 in the ECC. Daimon Pollard had two assists, Ben Fieldsend and Elijah Stein had goals and Blake McLeod made eight saves for Ledyard (5-3). Nate Virtue made eight saves for Fitch (2-5).

    • Matt Pierce of Wheeler scored twice as the Lions finished in a 2-2 tie with Plainfield in the ECC. Plainfield led 2-1 at halftime on a score by Jalen Arriaga and an own goal. Pierce's second-half goal on a free kick tied the game. Jonny Anderson assisted on Pierce's first goal and Matt Ryan made four saves for Wheeler (3-3-1).

    • Elias Dahl scored a pair of goals as Stonington pulled away in the second half for a 4-1 victory over Waterford in the ECC. The Bears (7-1) led 2-1 at halftime. Ethan Allen-Fernandez and Sam Montalto also scored goals for Stonington and goalie Brandon Tavares made three saves. Alex Art scored an unassisted goal for the Lancers (4-3) and goalie Casey White stopped 18 shots.

    • East Lyme got back to work after a two-week break and beat Bacon Academy 1-0 on senior night. The Vikings (2-1) scored the game's only goal in the 48th minute when Matt Tapia scored off an assist from Cooper Pazzaglia. Goalie Owen Brown made six saves for East Lyme, which held an 8-6 edge in shots, while Owen Burton stopped five shots for the Bobcats (1-6).
