High school football / Week 2 capsules
Friday’s games
Windham at Waterford, 6 p.m.
Records: Windham (0-1, 0-0 ECC Div. II); Waterford (0-1, 0-0)
Last week: Windham lost to Woodstock 40-27; Waterford lost to Killingly 42-14
Outlook: Waterford had its moments last week despite the loss to Killingly. Jordan Elci caught a 76-yard touchdown pass from Nate Hynes and Hynes scrambled for a long touchdown run, indicating the offense has some ability. The defense also forced four turnovers, including three fumbles and Liam Pickett’s interception.
Guilford at New London, 6 p.m.
Records: Guilford (0-1); New London (0-0)
Last week: Guilford lost to Jonathan Law 34-7; New London was idle
Outlook: The region will find out about the 2021 Whalers, following last week’s bye. Guilford opened its season with a loss to Jonathan Law, but has a senior receiver Eric Dolmus, who was mentioned by GameTime CT as one of the top 25 players in Connecticut. Dolmus, at 5-foot-10 and 175 pounds, has an offer from Central Connecticut State.
Killingly at East Lyme, 6:30 p.m.
Records: Killingly (1-0); East Lyme (1-0)
Last week: Killingly defeated Waterford 42-14; East Lyme defeated Montville (41-18)
Outlook: Impressive debuts for both teams last week. Jack Sharpe ran for 130 yards and Soren Rief had a 70-yard interception return as Killingly looked like, well, Killingly in a win at Waterford. Meanwhile, East Lyme quarterback Will Anglin went 13-18 for 203 yards and three touchdowns (also had six solo tackles) and Rowan Mundell added two touchdown runs.
Stonington at Griswold/Wheeler, 6:30 p.m.
Records: Stonington (0-1, 0-0 ECC Div. III); Griswold/Wheeler (0-1, 0-0)
Last week: Stonington lost to Fitch 13-7; Griswold/Wheeler lost to Ledyard 50-8
Outlook: This has been one of the ECC’s best small school rivalry and divisional games over the years. Stonington showed some promise, despite the loss to Fitch, maintaining a chance to win the game deep into the fourth quarter. Griswold/Wheeler sustained some injuries to an already thin roster.
Saturday’s games
Ledyard at Bacon Academy, noon
Records: Ledyard (1-0, 0-0 ECC Div. II); Bacon (0-1, 0-0)
Last week: Ledyard defeated Griswold/Wheeler 50-8; Bacon lost to Plainfield 20-0
Outlook: Ledyard showed more offensive explosion last week than it had in years. Six different players scored, including James Green on a 17-yard run and a 58-yard punt return, Jackson Poulton (17-yard touchdown run and 38-yard touchdown reception); Justin Outlow (15-yard TD run); Wyatt Crawford (11-yard fumble return); Jacob Lenz (66-yard punt return); and Andrew Harris (safety on special teams).
NFA at Woodstock, noon
Records: NFA (0-1); Woodstock (1-0)
Last week: NFA lost to Xavier 31-19; Woodstock defeated Windham 40-27
Outlook: It’s been quite some time since Woodstock had a better record in NFA in football — at any point in the season. Last week’s degree of difficulty was a factor in that, as the Wildcats lost to Xavier, now ranked No. 9 in The Day Coaches’ Poll. NFA quarterback Jayden Desilus connected for a touchdown to Max Pierre Louis last week, a combination likely to repeat itself several times this season.
Valley/Old Lyme at Coginchaug/Hale Ray/East Hampton, 1 p.m.
Records: Valley/OL (1-0, 1-0 Pequot Sassacus); C/HR/EH (1-0, 1-0)
Last week: Valley defeated North Branford 28-7; C/HR/EH defeated CREC 14-7
Outlook: The post-Tim King era began smashingly for new coach Hill Gbunblee and the Warriors. Senior James Marsden accounted for three of their four touchdowns, two rushing and one receiving.
Bullard Havens/Kolbe Cathedral at Thames River, 4 p.m.
Records: Bullard/Kolbe (0-1); Thames River (1-0)
Last week: Bullard/Kolbe lost to Cheney Tech 40-8; Thames River defeated O’Brien Tech 36-6
Outlook: The Crusaders open their home schedule with a chance to go to 2-0. Last week, Seth Cunningham rushed for 142 yards and two scores and quarterback Jake Brenek threw for 157 yards, threw a TD pass and rushed for two more. Dom Martinez had 51 yards receiving and Cam Tompkin caught a touchdown pass.
