    Local roundup: East Lyme swimmers win final event to edge Fitch co-op 86-84

    Groton — East Lyme won the meet's final event — the 400-yard freestyle relay — to pull out an 86-84 victory over the Fitch cooperative program in an Eastern Connecticut Conference swimming meet at UConn Avery Point.

    Hawken Hammen, Ken Chen, Ryan Huang and Eric Wang won in 3 minutes, 30.94 seconds for the Vikings (3-0, 2-0) in the first meeting between the two rivals. Wang also added wins in the 200 free (1:45.90) and 100 free (50.50) while joining Huang, Hammen and Brendan Fant on the winning 200 free relay (1:30.94).

    Ben Chidley and Jacob Lin were double-winners for the Falcons (1-1, 1-1), Chidley capturing the 200 M (2:03.50) and 100 breaststroke (1:03.36) and Lin the 500 free (4:57.80) and 100 backstroke (55.60). Mike Urgo added a win in the 50 free (22.42) for Fitch and joined Lin, Chidley and Matt Nowak on the winning 200 medley relay (1:40.65).

    In other meets:

    • Alex Ji won a pair of events to lead NFA past Waterford 92-77 in the ECC. Ji captured the 100-meter individual medley (2:28.98) and 100 breaststroke (1:13.14) for the Wildcats (1-1, 1-1), who also picked up individual wins from Anna Gosselin (400 free, 5:24.54), Brady Conley (50 free, 29.30), Jackson Bell (200 free, 2:31.10) and Elijah Ramthun (1:07.91). NFA's Matthew Lin, Zi Yan Mei, Jonah Mlyneic and Brendan Droesch added a win in the 200 freestyle relay (2:01.62)

    Alex Start won the 100 butterfly (1:10.4) and Dylan Wininger-Sieve the 100 backstroke (1:20.47) for the Lancers (0-2, 0-2), who also picked up two relay wins with Wininger-Sieve, Noah Westcott, Startz and Liam Pickett winning the 200 medley relay (2:13.66), and Colin Noyes, Ethan Jones, Louis Dhervilly and Kevin Kilcomons capturing the 400 free relay (4:36.49).

    Men's basketball

    • Putnam Science Academy built a 40-36 halftime lead and never trailed again in defeating St. Thomas More 81-69. Barry Evans led PCA with 20 points while Kyle Carlesimo scored 26 points for the Chancellors, Joe Berry had 14 and Jonathan Beagle 10. "We got beat because they dominated our guards," T-More coach Jere Quinn said. 

    Girls' basketball

    • Morgan beat Old Lyme 36-35 in a Shoreline Conference game that featured a wild finish. The Wildcats trailed 34-32 when Megan Loflin scored and was fouled just before the buzzer sounded. The officials met and put one second on the clock, sending Loflin to the line.

    She made the free throw to give Old Lyme the lead, but two players — forgetting there was still time on the clock — came off the bench to congratulate Loflin, the Wildcats were called for a technical foul, and Morgan's Caeley Ayer made both free throws to give the Huskies an improbable win. Loflin finished with 12 points and 14 rebounds for Old Lyme (4-3, 2-3) and Alexis Fenton had 13 points.

    • Maya Hillman had another double-double — 13 points and 13 rebounds, as Montville defeated Windham 42-39 in an ECC Division III game. Grace Sanford added 14 points and nine rebounds for the Indians (6-5, 2-2).

    • Plainfield outlasted Stonington 38-34 in an ECC Division III game. Anne Drago had 16 points, seven rebounds and five steals for the Bears (4-6, 2-2) while Gabriella Dimock finished with 14 points and seven rebounds and Sophia Fernholz had 10 rebounds and five assists.

    • Ellis Tech held Norwich Tech to just two points in the first half and defeated the Warriors 29-13 in the CTC. Ashlyn Bill led Norwich Tech (2-7) with 10 points. Ellis Tech is 6-2.

    • Claudia Koiva scored 14 points as Windham Tech defeated Grasso Tech 52-14 in the CTC. Sam Post scored five points and Olivia Kane four for Grasso Tech (0-6). 

    • Marissa Nudd scored 18 of her game-high 26 points in the first half of Bacon Academy’s 67-28 win over Woodstock Academy in Thursday night's ECC Division II game. Valerie Luizzi scored 15 for the Bobcats (8-1, 4-0) and Ashley Lizotte added nine points. The Centaurs are 3-6, 0-3.

    Boys' basketball

    • Devan Williams scored 18 points to lead unbeaten St. Bernard to a 77-57 win over Griswold. Tyson Wheeler had 16 points and Cedric Similien scored 14 for the Saints (8-0). Jeff Souvenance led Griswold (1-4) with 12 points. 

    • Stonington beat Plainfield 74-36 in an ECC Division III game. Cam Hinchey scored 14 points and Nate Cyr scored 13 for the Bears (4-2, 2-0). Tyler Nordstrom led Plainfield with 19 points.

    • Riley Walsh scored 25 points to lead East Lyme to a 56-50 win over Fitch in an ECC Division I game. Will Anglin had 12 points and Gavin O'Brien scored 10 for East Lyme (6-3, 2-1). Jaysen Hammar had 18 points and Yani Hernandez scored 12 for Fitch (2-6, 0-3). 

    • Windham Tech edged Grasso Tech 60-59 in a CTC game. Julius Goode had 23 points and Charis Johnson scored 12 for Grasso. Joey Johnson had 21 points and Brody Belanger scored 14 for Windham Tech.

    • Keith Zardies had 11 points and eight steals as Wheeler beat Haddam-Killingworth 44-40 in a nonleague game on Thursday night. Deondre Bransford had 17 rebounds for Wheeler (6-3).
