ECC shut out of Day state coaches' poll

It’s perhaps fitting in a week that the Eastern Connecticut Conference has interleague games that none of its teams received a vote in The Day of New London's Top 10 state coaches' poll.

Bacon Academy and Norwich Free Academy were both unbeaten and receiving votes headed into this past weekend when both were upset. Fitch took down last Friday, 21-9. Killingly routed the Bobcats last Saturday, 40-7.

There were 25 teams from six different conferences that received votes this week. The ECC and the small-school Pequot without representation.

The ECC’s reputation has taken a well-deserved hit over the years because it hasn’t won a CIAC state title in six seasons, its longest drought. Twenty eight titles have been awarded over that time, and the state’s other seven leagues have won at least one.

The ECC has a chance to defend its honor this weekend as four of its teams play against those from the Southern Connecticut Conference, headlined by NFA playing host to Xavier on Saturday. On Friday, East Lyme (Law), Fitch (Guilford), and New London (Foran) all play road games against SCC teams.
