    Avery Tract

    Town: Waterford

    Directions: From I-95 northbound, take Exit 83, left at end of ramp, up hill to intersection, then right at light onto Route 32; go about 2 miles to right on Scotch Cap Road.From I-95 southbound, take Exit 84 just over the Gold Star Bridge to Route 32 to right on Scotch Cap Road. Preserve is about one-quarter mile on the left. Look for a small sign tacked to a tree.

    Where to Park: Parking on the street.

    Description: This mixed hardwood forest of roughly 100 acres is near the banks of the Thames River just north of Smith Cove. The first section of marked trails through the property passes behind a large condominium complex. River and railroad tracks can be seen through the trees, but there is no direct access to the river. Trails are easy to moderate, with some slopes.

    Regulations: Dogs on a leash allowed; no horses, mountain bikes or motorized vehicles.

    Amenities: None.

    Natural Features: Some large rock cliffs on the red trail. Some unique tree species that are the remnants of the former owner's tree farm can be found in the interior of the property.

    Fees: Free.

    Things to note: Area lacks a dedicated parking area, so cars must be left on the street. Land trust is seeking members to help manage its properties in Waterford and Montville.
