Letter made clear why Groton Republicans struggle politically

A reccent letter urged creation of a conservative third party, exemplified by the GOP lack of presence in Groton government, “Needed is a truly conservative party, not Democrats lite,” (April 26). Unfortunately, the writer then goes into details to support his view. These comments alone may be nearly sufficient to explain the “why” of the GOP stature in Groton by relentlessly defaulting to name-calling and insult, without ever mentioning a policy position that the well-educated engineers, accountants, medical professionals, teachers and other citizens with advanced educational credentials might have found persuasive.

Criticizing the Democratic governing party with − “jackasses”, “lunatic”, “war on plastic”— certainly does not pique my interest. Admitting that his term for the GOP was meant as an “insult” most likely had the same effect on many other readers as it did on me: “I’ll pass on this one.” Hopefully, I will read a letter in the future that will explain with constructive, issue-based ideas, what a thoughtful conservative viewpoint might be.
