Coan well earned his 'comparable' pay at Mystic Aquarium

I find the suggestion by columnist David Collins that Steve Coan's compensation is excessive to be petty, ironic, and misplaced, particularly on the heels of his monumental victory, against formidable odds, to relocate five belugas to ample quarters, designed specifically to accommodate these gentle giants, at Mystic Aquarium, “5 beluga whales flown from Canada make a splash at new home in Mystic,” (May 15).

Mystic Aquarium has faced unique challenges since its founding nearly 50 years ago. It is located near but with no direct access to water; within a few hours’ drive, but not within a high-population center; and, outside the geographical interest range of most super-donors. Keeping Mystic Aquarium above water has been a struggle. No one in that time has done more to build Mystic Aquarium's national reputation, solidify its financial base, and secure its future than Coan.

Institutional leaders of Coan's caliber are rare, hard to come by, difficult to retain. His intellectual, financial, political, and entrepreneurial talents have been amply tested against the Aquarium's complex internal and external operating challenges. Creativity, courage, persistence, dedication, and hard work are the hallmarks of his success. Dr. Coan's compensation after nearly 20 years leading one of Connecticut's largest non-profit institutions aligns with comparable organizations.
