    Marx supports police and accountability

I read with amusement Todd Lynch’s letter alleging that Martha Marx, candidate of the state senate, supports the defund the police movement. (“Marx doesn’t support police,” Oct. 5) The fact is that in the three years that Martha has been a New London City Councilor she has supported all three city budgets presented to the council. Each of those budgets included an increase in funding for the police department. That is hardly the actions of a defund the police supporter.

I marched with Martha Marx in the rally held in New London after the murder of George Floyd. My recollection is that there were several thousand people who marched peacefully that day. My recollection is that we marched because we were horrified by the actions of the police who murdered Floyd, and those who stood by and watched his murder. We can and should be horrified by these kinds of abuses of power. We can and should and do demand accountability by those in authority. The “defund the police” accusation has sadly become the accusation tossed around by those who do not believe in police accountability.
