    The Day keeps government accountable

How did the Republican Party on L.I. allow a serial liar to run for office? How was it missed? The Day's editorial cartoon on "Santos" Saturday reminded me of how important local news reporting and columnists are in assuring good local government. How many times has David Collins and Steve Slosberg before him exposed questionable local government policies?

While none of us always agree with all they have written, the investigative press is the life-blood of good democracy. As I was contemplating writing this, David Collins struck again, “Groton councilors rejected the savior of Downing Cottage,” (Jan. 21), the absurd decision not to appoint John Goodrich as a permanent member of the Historic District Commission, underscoring the dysfunction of our Groton Town Government, which often places questionable rules and incorrect parliamentary procedure above good government and the democratic will of the people by misusing FOI and "point of order" to muzzle proper debate and the public will.

While it is sad that The Day had to cut coverage of local news to a few times a week, at least we still have some local coverage to call attention to the important local issues and keep our local government accountable. Keep it up!
