Getting harder to protect our natural resources

Thanks Kevin Blacker. “Rinky-dink’ meetings need coverage from local papers,” June 12. I too lament the loss of The Day’s contributors when 20 years ago the likes of Slosberg, Gathers, and Kimball covered our “battle” in Gales Ferry to stop a proposed 1.5 million gallon water tower from being placed on Mount Decatur when it was “under siege” again.

Slosberg wrote that Commodore Stephen Decatur was “getting SHAFTED heftily here once again” (10/29/2002). We won that fight, but in my wildest dreams I could never have imagined what is on the table today. Decatur, the memory of his actions, and most of the mountain itself (38 acres worth) could be BLASTED out of existence, the aggregate of which will be sold for use in offshore wind power projects.

Protecting our natural resources and cultural heritage seems harder than ever before. Will blasting away Ledyard’s ledges to create future industrial or residential development space soon be considered the norm? Ledyard Inland Wetlands and Watercourses application IWWC#23-2URA. See town website. If it bothers you, come to the next IWWC meeting on Tuesday, July 11 to speak up. See you there.
