Think twice before ‘going south’
In response to a letter to the editor Saturday, Feb. 24, "Go south, new retirees," several expenses were not included. Auto registration in Florida is a one-time fee, but auto insurance is double what we pay in Connecticut. Gas prices are a few cents cheaper, but with all the traffic, it will take you longer to get where you are going. Tires, battery and wipers you will replace frequently due to the heat. Homeowner insurance is triple if you can get coverage at all, and grocery prices are a lot higher.
The biggest issue is health care. Finding a doctor that will see you is difficult, and if you do find a doctor, you need to make an appointment weeks in advance. If you have a health issue, you must go to the ER or a clinic which is very expensive. I suggest retirees consider everything before deciding to "go south."
