East Lyme to hold budget meeting

East Lyme — Residents will have one more opportunity to learn about the $62.2 million town budget proposal before it goes to referendum.

The annual town meeting is scheduled for 7 p.m. today at the high school auditorium.

The Board of Finance approved the 2012-13 budget proposal, a 1.41 percent increase over the current budget, at a special meeting April 23. The total includes a $21 million general government budget and a $41.2 million school budget.

If approved, the budget would raise the tax rate by 0.5 mills, according to minutes from the April 23 meeting. The current tax rate is 19.47 mills.

Residents at the town meeting also will adopt a five-year capital plan and vote to approve $17,250 for emergency management needs. The state Department of Emergency Services & Public Protection is expected to reimburse the town for the costs, which include $5,825 for kitchen renovations at the Emergency Operations Center and $3,500 for maintenance of a backup generator and radios.

The Capital Improvement Plan, meanwhile, is proposed at $796,722.

Polls will be open from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m. May 24 at the Community Center for the budget referendum.
