Norwich utility: Water has 'unpleasant' odor, taste, but not harmful

Norwich — Norwich Public Utilities announced today that the prolonged period of heat that followed a period of heavy rain has caused a "slight, unpleasant odor and change in taste" to the city's water supply.

The utility called it a "naturally occurring change to the water reservoir environment." It said it is taking the necessary corrective measures to return the reservoir environment to its normal condition and expects the situation to be resolved soon. It added the taste and smell change is not harmful and chilling it before drinking may help reduce or eliminate the odor.

"We consistently sample the water to ensure that the water supply remains safe and healthy to drink," the utility said in a statement.
